Senator John Thune and Representative Stephanie Herseth have received the “Friend of Farm Bureau” award from the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF). According to SDFB President Scott VanderWal, “This is a highly coveted award in Congress. We appreciate the support of Senator Thune and Representative Herseth for key issues important to America’s farmers and ranchers.” Both Thune and Herseth received high marks for their support of several priority issues for the Farm Bureau. Thune’s voting record included support of renewable fuels and other energy policies supported by Farm Bureau, in addition to tax relief and disaster assistance for farmers and ranchers. Herseth’s votes reflected support of property rights, energy, water development, and market access for agricultural products. The award is given each session of Congress based on nominations from state Farm Bureaus and approval from the AFBF Board of Directors. The award is based on voting records on AFBF’s priority issues established by the Board of Directors, number of bills that a member has sponsored and co-sponsored, specific leadership role for Farm Bureau on priority issues, and how accessible and responsive that member is to Farm Bureau members and leaders.
